422

422. That's the number of movies I watched in 2010. That’s only six more than I saw last year, but well below my all-time record of 588 in 2004, which I hope I never equal. Being unemployed the last 2 ½ months of the year meant an increase in movie-watching; otherwise, I wouldn’t have made it to 400. The number also doesn’t include all the television series on DVD I’ve been digging through this year, including THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, and others.

Of the 422 movies I saw, I watched 248 of them for the first time. Here are my rules. As far as the count goes, only feature films count, no matter whether I saw them in a theater, DVD, VHS, or on TV.

• TV shows don't count, unless they were presented in a format resembling a feature film (for instance, the three pilot episodes of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, which aired as full-length made-for-TV movies)
• Made-for-TV movies count
• Documentaries count
• I didn't count short subjects or feature-length making-of documentaries included as DVD extras
• Movie serials and TV miniseries count as one long feature
• Multiple viewings each count as a separate movie

These are my rules. Your mileage may vary.

Plan Nine gets five stars and Carnival Magic only one?!?

(Awesome post, by the way. I loved the breakdowns. I ended 2010 with 401 films.)

I finished the year out with 410 films - a personal record. I can't believe how close I came last year to matching your level of movie consumption, Marty. Granted, I was unemployed for the first 10.5 months of the year....

Of those 410 films, 230 (56%) were first-time views, 223 (54%) were borrowed media (rentals, library, or from friends), and 61 (15%) were watched with my kids.

First film of the year: 2010 (natch!)
Last film of the year: Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins

The only film I saw twice during 2010 was Black Dynamite (once in the theater and once on DVD).

By decade:
1920s - 1 (0%)
1930s - 6 (1%)
1940s - 6 (1%)
1950s - 20 (5%)
1960s - 65 (16%)
1970s - 126 (31%)
1980s - 78 (19%)
1990s - 38 (9%)
2000s - 55 (13%)
2010s - 15 (4%)

By format:
DVD - 392
Blu-Ray - 3
Netflix Streaming - 1 (Can you guess what new device we picked up?)
VHS - 0
Broadcast - 4
Theater - 10

Most films in a single month: 41 in April
Least films in a single month: 25 in December

Really love this breakdown. I attempted to do the same but unfortunately don't have the time to drill down by genre. Maybe tomorrow.

As it stands, I viewed 790 films in 2010. Here's my post (inspired by yours): http://chimptalk.blogspot.com/2010/12/2010-movie-tally.html

I watched 268 new films in 2010, not counting things I'd seen before & just re-watched.

Of those, 9 were in theaters: Kick-Ass, Nightmare on Elm Street, Iron Man 2, Predators, Toy Story 3, Inception, The Expendables, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Machete. I also saw Vertigo in a theater, and two Rifftrax shows (Reefer Madness and House on Haunted Hill).

Best things I saw: Ink, Automatons, Black Dynamite, Penn & Teller Get Killed, Looker, Southland Tales ("Pimps don't commit suicide." *wink*), Not Quite Hollywood.

I'm glad I saw: Head, War of the Worlds ($5,000 version), Who's That Girl.

Worst things I saw: The Shape of Things to Come ('79), Inalienable, Charlie Chan & The Curse of the Dragon Queen (both Richard Hatch!), Inglorious Bastards 2, Sydney White, Redboy 13.

There were many films that were very good and great, but those were the most indelible.

You are a force of nature. To paraphrase a line from a film that I am sure has slipped by you..."That, is why you succeed."
